We are pleased to announce that our Grants for Individual Artists fund has now been awarded to 12 individuals working in a range of artistic disciplines including theatre, graphic design, music and poetry. As part of our aim to support artists from disadvantaged communities to tell their own stories and set their own narratives, we made available small grants of up to £5,000 for individuals to use on their own artistic development or their own artistic project without having to form organisations through which to receive funds. We had an unprecedented number of applications and would like to thank everyone who applied. Amongst those who have been offered an award are:
Basel Zaraa, to fund a new Palestinian hip-hop CD and tour, Graphic Designer Soofiya Andry to take a course on zine-making; Theatre Producer Tobi Kyeremateng to travel to a performing arts festival in South Africa, Rebecca Davies to develop a community arts project in Stoke-On-Trent, Selina Thompson to work with Bradford teenager girls on her ‘Missy Elliot Project’, and visual artist Hamja Ahsan to research his Hillsborough football fanzines project.
