The Aziz Foundation is proud to be sponsoring a three-month full-time paid editorial internship at Granta Magazine open to people who represent and are active in British Muslim communities. The successful candidate will be trained in proofreading, copy-editing and publishing best practice. Applicants must be 18-24 years old and should have, or be expected to achieve, an upper second class degree or equivalent undergraduate qualification and plan to work full-time in publishing in the future. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a long-term commitment to British Muslim communities.

Granta Magazine – Editorial Internship £12,831 pro-rata (in affiliation with the Aziz Foundation)

Granta magazine, Britain’s leading, literary quarterly, is looking for a conscientious and creative individual for a three-month, full-time editorial internship, starting on 31 July 2017. Granta are a small, dynamic editorial team, and this internship offers the chance to work with them closely in order to learn what is involved in publishing the magazine, both online and in print.

Please note: This internship is only available to individuals who represent or are active in British Muslim communities.

The successful applicant will have: 

  • Completed, or be entering the final year of, an undergraduate degree
  • Excellent attention to detail (e.g. grammar, spelling, style, consistency, accuracy)
  • Fluency in all Microsoft Office programs, and in various social media platforms
  • The capacity to write clear, effective copy text
  • Initiative and the ability to work independently
  • Good interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • An interest in literature, journalism and the arts

The internship will include some training and a variety of tasks, including:

Editorial

  • In-house proofreading and copy-editing training, with guidance on how to follow publishing best practices and work to a particular publication’s house style
  • Proofreading, editing and fact-checking pieces which will be published in the print edition and on Granta.com
  • Reading and concisely evaluating submissions
  • Reading books submitted to the magazine, and suggesting extracts to feature on Granta.com
  • Researching images to accompany stories and articles

Digital

  • Learning how to navigate, edit and maintain a WordPress website
  • Correcting and manage archival material on the website in accordance with our style guide

Social Media 

  • Contributing to Granta’s social-media platforms on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, which will involve learning best practices for engaging with our wide readership, sharing classic pieces from Granta’s archive and promoting their latest content
  • Summarising articles and finding pull quotes for use on social media.

Applicants should be available for on-site interviews, which will be held in the Granta offices from 24 – 28 July and be available to start on 31 July 2017.
