Former Aziz Foundation scholar, Aaya Al Shamahi, who studied for an MA in Character Animation at Central St Martins just directed her first animated short for the London International Film Festival!
Titled Ha-wa-iya, the animation focuses on a young British-Yemeni women living in London who reminisces about her childhood with her cousin in Yemen. Like many Yemenis, the war in the country has left her unable to see her family and she is left trying to keep that connection alive.
A major well done to Aaya and her team for pulling together such an incredible sting in the middle of a global pandemic. Whilst the film won’t be featured on the big screen as originally planned due to the pandemic, the sting has received significantly positive feedback online and we can’t wait to see more of Aaya’s work!
