THE PICCADILLY COMMUNITY CENTRE
Situated in the basement of the Trocadero, the Piccadilly Community Centre will be open between 10am – 7pm, Mon-Fri. The prayer space will be an indispensable service for the Muslims who work, visit and live in the area and for whom prayer forms a cornerstone of their life.
The community centre will also provide much needed space for community groups to hold meetings and events as well as being open to the wider public for guided tours around the prayer space.
WHAT IS BEING PROPOSED?
We’re excited about this much-needed prayer-space and community centre in the basement of London’s iconic Trocadero building. Occupying less than 1.5% of the building, this space will accommodate local needs. The prayer space will be open on weekdays between 10am-7pm.
WHO IS THIS SPACE FOR?
The prayer space is intended to serve Muslim men and women who live, work and visit the area as a space where they can worship. This will join the community of prayer spaces already available nearby: Church of England, Catholic, French Catholic, French Protestant, Baptist Chapel, Chinese Church, the Macedonian Orthodox Chapel, the Radha-Krishna Temple, and others.
The centre will also champion and represent community cohesion and interfaith solidarity through a contemplation/meditation/ space and seminar room available for use by the local community.
WHY DO WE NEED A PRAYER SPACE?
Existing mosques in the West End just do not have the capacity to serve all Muslims who live and work here and cannot provide prayer space for women. This centre will satisfy a pressing need. Worshippers will no longer have to pray on the streets and women will have access to adequate prayer space; they will have the dignity of offering prayers in a tranquil setting.
WHAT IMPACT WILL THIS HAVE ON THE LOCAL AREA?
We’re very passionate about ensuring that the local community is able to prosper and grow through our projects. We anticipate that nearly all visitors to our facility will arrive on foot or by public transport, as most work in the local area or will be visitors to the West End.
